Pick Up the Phone

Pick Up the Phone

Pretty soon, there’ll be someone on the phone.
You’ll pick it up, exhale a tired hello.
The pattern is by now completely known.
Things go the way that things are meant to go.
Rebellion is a process so damn slow
that in the end it only weaves its zeal
into the pattern: all its fire’s for show;
all the fine speeches only seal the deal.
Oh, there it is! It’s ringing! If you feel
a little less committed than you should
to answering, then let your inner spiel
roll out — for self-indulgence can be good.
Hell, so can self-deception — when it sings.
You’ll pick it up the next time that it rings.
