Sing the Blues

“Lefty, he can’t sing the blues
all night long like he used to….”

–Townes Van Zandt, “Pancho and Lefty

The sadness of betrayal chokes you, sir.
All other sadnesses are dim and gray.
You cannot be the voice that once you were.
Your throat’s an instrument you cannot play.
You are not looking for a better day.
Your better day is firmly in the past.
That’s what you suffer, sir, when you betray.
Though you object, objections will not last.
And yet, that’s just the way that you are classed.
If you, sir, were another kind of guy,
things could be otherwise — and, unharassed
by conscience, you could cuddle with a lie
that looked much like the truth, if somewhat neater.
Then, as betrayer, you’d sing ten times sweeter.

–Tom Riley
