Loquitur Dana Gioia

Loquitur Dana Gioia

I guess I won’t hear Dana Gioia speak.
The speech is in the morning, Saturday,
at the church where (here I am not unique)
I dare to take Communion. Hip, hurray!
Culture can now intone, Up, up, away–
like Superman! Its limit is the sky.
My parish will hear Dana have his say–
but I’ll remain an unpoetic guy.
Parental obligations, people, lie
at the sad base of why I cannot go.
My schedule fixed, I cannot even try.
Unsympathetic fates have made it so.
Crystal ambitions in my spirit shatter.
To me, prosaic, poetry can’t matter.
