Tyrion Lannister Delights in Dickens

(for Thomas L’anneaux)

“A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.”

–Tyrion to Jon Snow

Tyrion would have loved, I say, Bleak House,
but most of Dickens would have left him cold.
Half man, all drunk, and just two-fifths a louse,
in literary matters he was bold
and competent. He loved the very old,
the cryptic, and indeed the sort of stuff
that those cast from a less-inquiring mold
held worthless. We can say his mind was tough,
however much he faltered in the rough-
and-tumble. Like the dwarf in Poe, he knew
that souls were not enticing in the buff,
that all we are is what we dare to do.
Treacly orations would have made him ill.
Spontaneous combustion, though? A thrill!

–Tom Riley
