(for Rhi)

Folks who like Halloween the best of all
Are different from that crowd of Christmas louts—
Whose “carols,” as they’re called, are drunken shouts
Belched because true devotion tends to stall;
Whose gluttony must certainly appall
Refinement as it views their eating bouts;
Whose consciousness knows existential doubts
Hardly at all, their minds are so damn small.
Folks who like Halloween the best are wise.
They are not looking merely for the splatter
Of cinematic blood, for melting eyes
And boundaries that shiver, shake, and shatter.
Not one of these clichés in fact applies.
For us, this is a literary matter.

Happy Halloween!
