Amongst the Unmartyred

Amongst the Unmartyred

She wouldn’t leave the body there to rot.
She disobeyed the state – and Creon too.
Threatened, she answered: “Ha! What else you got?”—
As all the most heroic martyrs do.
But what’s the lesson here for me and you?
Are we as well, in utter imitation,
To flip off all the powers right on cue
From circumstances past our calculation?
Such zeal is certainly above our station.
We’re not the offspring of a mythic king
Who suffered gravely, then knew elevation.
Is martyrdom our course? It’s no such thing.
In us that sort of thought should never stir.
Act against piety? Yes, Creon, sir!
